FAQ

Employment

Do you have any job openings at the Navajo Language Program?

When we have job openings, we will post them to the UNM Jobs website here. We will also post a brief job description to our Instagram page.

Can my organization hire you to teach a short-term language class?

We would love to, but our staff are not able to teach any classes outside of their current workload at UNM.

Translation

Are you able to translate a document for us?

Unfortunately, the NLP faculty are unable to complete any translation requests. The Navajo Language Program faculty are full-time UNM employees.

Can you refer me to Navajo translators?

We are not able to refer you to a Navajo language translator. Unfortunately, we do not maintain current contact information for any Navajo language translators.

Navajo Classes

What classes are you currently offering?

Our classes vary from semester to semester. To see our current course schedule, please see our page on the Linguistics Department website here.

Do you have online Navajo classes available?

The Navajo Language Program currently offers one section of NAVA 1110 (Navajo 1) online each semester. The Navajo Language Program is part of the University of New Mexico (UNM), so this class is offered for UNM university credit. You can see our course offerings here. Once you are on this website, follow these steps to see the availability of the course:

1. Click on the link that says “See Course Offerings.”

2. Select the term for when you would like to take the course, for example, “Fall 2025”.

3. Under “Subject,” enter “Navajo.”

4. If the course is online, it will say under “Meeting Times”, “Campus” and “Attribute”.

How can I register for a Navajo class at UNM?

In order to register for a Navajo class at UNM, you will first have to be admitted as a student. You can enroll as a non-degree seeking student, meaning that you will take classes without being formally admitted to a degree program (such as Bachelor’s or Master’s). This is the fastest way to be admitted to UNM. More information can be found here.

Who can I reach out to with questions about registering for classes at UNM?

You can schedule an online appointment, live chat, or call the office of the registrar for questions about registering for classes. More details can be found on the registrar website.

How much are the Navajo classes at UNM?

UNM tuition fees and rates vary. Detailed information can be found online for the most current semester here. Most Navajo classes are 3 credits, so you would be charged the current rate for 3 undergraduate credits (or graduate, depending on the course), plus student fees.

Additionally, an individual who is a member of an Indian nation, tribe, or pueblo that is located wholly or partially in New Mexico, regardless of the member’s permanent residence prior to acceptance at UNM, is charged in-state tuition rates. Evidence of tribal membership (Certificate of Indian Blood or Proof of Tribal Enrollment) must be emailed to UNM Admissions at apply@unm.edu OR mailed to PO Box 4895, Albuquerque, NM 87196-4895, no later than the 3rd Friday of the fall or spring semester.

How can I get financial aid from UNM to attend the class?

You will have to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for any financial aid. However, students who are non-degree seeking are not eligible to receive financial aid from UNM.

Do other universities offer online classes?

Yes, they do. Please check the website of the universities you are interested in attending to see if they offer such classes.

Navajo Culture and Language Resources

Where can I find Navajo Language resources?

We have a list of learning materials that is available on our website here.

Where can I access resources about Navajo culture?

The Zimmerman Library at UNM has many resources, as do the Albuquerque Public Libraries. These libraries are open to the public, as long as you have valid government or school-issued photo identification.

At the NLP, we also invite those with cultural knowledge to give presentations throughout the year. We usually share a Zoom link in the Posts and Events section of our website so that anyone interested can join.

There is also a lot of information about Navajo culture available online today, especially on YouTube. We have videos of our previous presentations posted on our YouTube channel.

Where can I get the graphics you post on Facebook and Instagram as posters or flashcards?

Our graphics are not currently available as posters or flashcards. We are working to add them to the UNM Digital Repository so that they will be publicly available in a format that is useful for the classroom. Do note that some of our online graphics also have a corresponding audio component on our YouTube Channel; we are currently working to make sure each post has an audio component.

Can I use these graphics in my classroom?

Yes, our materials can be used in the classroom or for other educational, non-commercial purposes. We ask that you please give us credit when using these materials; please state that the source is from the UNM Navajo Language Program and include the link for the Facebook or Instagram post where the graphic is from.

We’ve recently started developing a way to make these materials easily accessible, so that all you have to do is print and distribute them.

Shirts and Swag

Can I purchase a shirt or tote bag from the NLP?

We cannot sell any items from the NLP. However, you can get our swag by showing up to events we attend. We tend to participate at the UNM Welcome Back Days at the beginning of the semester, the annual UNM Nizhoni Days Student PowWow in April (if there is space), the American Indian Senior Day Information Fair in November, and the American Indian Junior Day Information Fair in April at UNM. Please follow us on Instagram and Facebook to find out when these events are happening.
